HIBERNIAN F.C.

Easter Road in the name of the Leith football stadium which is the home ground of the Scottish Championship football club Hibernian FC.

Hibernian first played at the present site in 1893, in a friendly match against Clyde FC. At this stage they were only renting the ground as it was then and were even considering moving Hibernian to Aberdeen at one point, so did not invest in the ground. In fact, it wasn’t until 1922, when the club took out a 25-year lease on the ground that they began investing in the club and began on the journey to making the club and the ground what they are today.

It is the fifth largest football stadium in Scotland with a current all seated capacity of just over 20,000 (20, 421). As well as Hibernian, whose fans refer to it as “The Holy Ground”, the venue has also been home to international matches, Scottish League Cup semi-finals and was for a short time, home to the Edinburgh professional rugby union team.

The size of the ground was greatly reduced from former glory – in fact it holds the record for greatest attendance for a Scottish match outside Glasgow when, in 1950, 65, 860 fans attended an Edinburgh Derby (against Hearts FC) there. The size of the terrace was vastly reduced in the 1980’s and then more redevelopment began in 1995 until completion in 2010, to what it is today.
