BANANA FLATS

Cables Wynd House, also known as the Leith Banana Flats due to the curved shape of the building, is a ten storey local authority housing block. The ground floor is called Cables Wynd and the nine floors above constitute Cables Wynd House.

The building contains 203 flats. The first occupants of these flats moved in in 1962 and the flats were seen as a welcome escape from the overcrowded slums that many occupants moved from.

The flats have featured in the works of Leith-born author Irvine Welsh, in both his hugely popular 1993 book “Trainspotting” and his television drama “Wedding Belles”
